What Is Coaching?
The Coaching that I deliver is based on the telephone
coaching techniques promoted by the prestigious Coaching
and Mentoring international. I am a fully qualified
and graduate member of this organization.
We offer ‘non-directional’ coaching- in
other words, your coach will definitely not be telling
you what you should or should not be doing, nor will
he be asking you leading questions to guide you to some
ready-formed ‘solution’. Instead, the life
coach draws on and develops the client’s deeper
knowledge of himself or herself and recognises that
the best solutions for any client are the ones that
they hold most closely to their heart.
These are the solutions that resonate with their own
'inner voice', a voice that is sometimes hard to hear
beneath musts, oughts, shoulds and isms.
Why is Coaching effective?
A coach uses skilled questioning techniques to
raise the client's self-awareness and offer him alternative
perceptions of his situation. This often leads to the
client realizing that they have more choices or options
than they might have imagined. All these ideas and answers
come from within, not from the coach.
The coach truly 'listens' to the client without judging
or advising. Clients point this out as being one of
the more powerful aspects of the process as they rarely
get to benefit from being 'truly listened to' in everyday
life. The coaching program creates an inherent 'forward
momentum'. The action steps that are agreed at each
session are the real stepping-stones toward the goal.
For example, in a situation of ‘loss’ (of confidence, personal loss, focus at work) we
would aim to achieve a transition from needing help
to being confident in making the right choice.
Accountability
Of course none of the above is much use if you don’t
then apply it! So your coach will ask you to commit
to appropriate actions of your own choosing, and the
start of each new session will usually include a review
and discussion of how you got on. ‘Accountability’
is something that clients find extremely positive and
motivating. Working in partnership with your coach,
clients usually accomplish much more than they could
achieve alone.
And finally - what coaching is not!
- Counselling or therapy.
- About uncovering, analysing and healing issues in
your emotional past.
- Prescriptive or something done by a coach to you.
- Nagging, you’ve got relatives for that!
